Referrals to the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department

When sending any referral please include;

  1. A referral letter,
  2. A referral form (if applicable),
  3. All relevant testing such as pap smears, biopsy/ECC, ultrasounds, bloodwork, etc.,
  4. Reports from other specialists involved in the patient's care.

This information will assist the physician when triaging the referral and the urgency of the appointment. Not including this information may result in delay of your patient being seen.

This clinic is for patients with non viable pregnancies only (missed abortion, incomplete abortion, ectopic pregnancies as long as the patient is stable, and pregnancies of unknown location). Patients should be stable and able to wait up to 72 hours to be seen in the clinic. Please ensure that all relevant and necessary information is included with the referral. You must send all ultrasound(s) and bloodwork (BhCG, Hgb, type and screen). lf patient is Rh negative, please indicate if they have received Winrho.

Pregnancy is a physiologic stress test that identifies some women as being at increased risk for cardiovascular disease. At the Maternal Health Clinic women are screened for cardiovascular risk factors at 6 months postpartum. Any woman who has one or more of the following pregnancy-related cardiovascular risk indicators is eligible to attend this clinic:

• Preeclampsia, eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, gestational hypertension
• Gestational diabetes
• IUGR baby or term baby <2500g
• Idiopathic preterm birth (prior to 37 weeks)
• Placental abruption leading to delivery for either maternal or fetal reasons

Referrals are typically made using our internal referral form before a patient is discharged from hospital. If a referral is missed, please complete the above form in full and fax to 613-548-1330. Patients who are referred will receive an appointment notice at 3-4 months postpartum. Appointments in this clinic are scheduled for 6 months postpartum. 

Note: The purpose of this clinic is cardiovascular disease screening and prevention at 6 months postpartum. Patients who require management in the early postpartum should be seen by their primary care physician, midwife or obstetrician as approriate.
